Nearly every residential cockroach call in this region is the German cockroach — small, pale brown, with two dark stripes behind the head. It is the one species that lives its whole life indoors and reproduces fast enough to go from a few insects to a serious infestation in a season.
Why we bait rather than spray
Broadcast spraying for German cockroaches is close to counterproductive. It kills what it contacts, drives the rest deeper into voids, and contaminates the surfaces where you would want bait to be taken. Decades of it have also produced widespread behavioural and physiological resistance in the species.
Gel baiting works because cockroaches feed on the bait, return to harbourage, and the active ingredient transfers through the population by contact and coprophagy. It reaches the insects you never see, which is most of them. It also requires you not to spray anything yourself between our visits — a can of household bug spray over a bait placement makes the bait unpalatable and sets the programme back weeks.
The multi-unit problem
In an apartment or a semi, treating one unit in isolation usually fails. German cockroaches move between units along shared plumbing chases, electrical runs and wall voids. A properly designed programme inspects and treats the adjacent units and the ones directly above and below, and coordinates timing so the population cannot simply shuttle back and forth.
If you rent, this is your landlord's responsibility under Ontario's Residential Tenancies Act. Report in writing, keep the record, and push for building-wide inspection rather than a single-unit treatment.
Preparation that actually matters
- Clean grease from around and behind the stove, the fridge coils and the base of cabinets. Grease is both a food source and it competes directly with the bait.
- Fix dripping taps and clear standing water. They can survive a long time without food and a short time without water.
- Remove cardboard storage. Corrugated cardboard is close to ideal harbourage — warm, dark, and it holds the aggregation pheromone.
- Do not deep-clean immediately before treatment to the point of removing all food. Slightly hungry cockroaches take bait better.
- Do not spray anything. This is the single most important instruction and the one most often ignored.

Cockroaches — common questions
Does having cockroaches mean my home is dirty?
No. They arrive in grocery packaging, second-hand appliances, moving boxes and along shared walls in multi-unit buildings. Clutter and grease help them thrive once they are in, but they do not cause the arrival.
How long does treatment take to work?
You should see a clear reduction within one to two weeks and elimination over six to eight weeks across three visits. Seeing dead cockroaches early is normal and a good sign; seeing live ones in week two is also normal.
Can I use store-bought sprays alongside your treatment?
No, and this genuinely matters. Household sprays repel cockroaches away from bait placements and contaminate the bait so it will not be taken. If you have already sprayed, tell us — it changes where we place bait.
What if I live in an apartment and my neighbour has them?
Then single-unit treatment will not hold. Report it to the landlord or property manager in writing and press for adjacent units to be inspected. Under the RTA the landlord is responsible for pest control in the building.
