Pest Control in Oro-Medonte
Woodland, moraine and farmland. This is where the wildlife work is, and where bats in older buildings are a genuine consideration.
Oro-Medonte is the most rural township we cover and it has the pest profile to match: substantially more wildlife exclusion, more rodent work involving outbuildings, and the region's highest concentration of bat roosts in older barns and farmhouses.
Wildlife in structures
Wooded lots with mature trees adjacent to the house give squirrels and raccoons an easy route to the roof, and rural properties tend to have older outbuildings with degraded soffits and roof edges. The result is that most of our raccoon and squirrel exclusion work in a given year happens in this township and in Springwater.
All of it is done as one-way exclusion with repair, not trapping. Ontario's Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act requires relocated wildlife to be released within one kilometre of capture, which means trapping alone does not solve anything on a rural property — the animal simply returns to a den it knows. Exclusion plus proper repair is what ends it.
Bats and the maternity season
Older barns, farmhouses and outbuildings in Oro-Medonte hold established bat roosts, some of them long-standing. Several Ontario bat species are at risk and protected, and exclusion is restricted through the maternity season — roughly June to mid-August — when flightless pups would be sealed inside. Work happens outside that window.
On rabies: if a bat has had direct contact with anyone, or has been found in a room with a sleeping person or a young child, contact the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit. Do not release that bat if it can be safely contained. That is a public health matter and it takes priority over the pest control question.
The Horseshoe Valley pattern
The recreational property around Horseshoe Valley and Craighurst adds a seasonal-occupancy layer on top of everything above — chalets and cottages empty for months with heat on, which is the rodent scenario described on our Innisfil page. Combined with the wooded surroundings, these properties need both exclusion and monitoring rather than reactive treatment.
