Ontario's structural ant. Finding the nest matters more than spraying the trail — and the ants are usually a moisture symptom.
Carpenter ants are the ant that matters in this part of Ontario. They do not eat wood — they excavate it to nest, and they strongly prefer wood that is already damp or partly decayed. That last detail is the whole diagnosis: a carpenter ant problem is very often a moisture problem that has been going on quietly for years.
Identifying them
Large, usually black, 6–13mm, with a single node at the waist and a smoothly rounded thorax in profile. The two things that distinguish them from the pavement ants people mostly see: size, and the presence of coarse sawdust-like shavings — frass — that often contains insect body parts. Frass under a windowsill, along a basement sill plate, or beneath a deck ledger is the strongest single indicator.
Winged ants indoors in spring are a swarm from a mature nest and mean the colony is established and inside, not visiting.
Parent nests and satellites
This is why spraying the trail achieves so little. A carpenter ant colony typically has a parent nest — often outdoors in a stump, a woodpile, or a damp tree — and one or more satellite nests, which are the ones inside your house. Killing foragers reduces the visible symptom for a fortnight and does nothing to the colony.
Effective treatment uses non-repellent products the ants carry back and transfer, so the colony is affected rather than the individuals you can see. It also means locating the nest, which is done by following trails at dusk when they are most active, sounding suspect wood, and — usefully — looking wherever there has been a water problem.
Where we find them in Barrie houses
- Around bathroom and kitchen plumbing penetrations where there has been a slow leak.
- Sill plates and rim joists on the shaded, north-facing side of the house.
- Under and around deck ledger boards, which are the single most common structural damp spot on a Barrie home.
- Window and door frames where the caulking has failed, especially on 1970s–80s wood-framed windows.
- Roof edges and soffits where ice damming has been wetting the sheathing each winter — a genuinely common Simcoe County pattern.
- Chimney chases and skylight curbs.
Any competent treatment will point at the moisture source. If nobody has mentioned one, the treatment is temporary.

Carpenter ants — common questions
Do carpenter ants cause structural damage?
They can, over years, but far more slowly than termites and usually confined to wood that was already compromised by moisture. The realistic risk in a Barrie home is localised damage to a sill plate, rim joist or deck ledger — significant enough to fix, not usually catastrophic.
I see a few big black ants. Do I need treatment?
Not necessarily. Foragers travel a long way and a handful indoors in summer may be coming from a stump in the yard. What changes the answer is frass, ants seen consistently in the same interior location, activity at night, or winged ants indoors in spring.
Can I treat carpenter ants myself?
Hardware store sprays kill the ants you spray and often make it worse, because repellent products can cause a colony to split and relocate — turning one nest into several. If you are going to try anything yourself, use a bait rather than a spray, and give it weeks rather than days.
Are termites a problem in Barrie?
Far less than in southern Ontario. Established termite populations in this province are concentrated in specific areas well south of here. If something is eating your wood in Barrie, carpenter ants are the overwhelmingly likely answer.
