Heat is faster and it kills eggs in one pass, which is its real advantage — the two-week interval in a chemical programme exists precisely to catch eggs that were not killed the first time. Chemical treatment done properly works reliably; it just takes six weeks rather than a day.
What you do not need to throw away
Almost nothing, and this is the most expensive misconception in this trade. Mattresses can be treated and encased rather than replaced. Clothing is handled by a hot wash and, more importantly, thirty minutes in a hot dryer — the dryer does the work, not the wash. Books, electronics and furniture are all treatable.
