If you live on a rural or edge-of-town property in Simcoe County with a large sun-facing wall, you know this problem: hundreds of sluggish flies appearing at upstairs windows on the first warm day of February, months after you thought the season was over.
What is actually happening
Cluster flies do not breed in your house and they are not a hygiene issue. Their larvae parasitise earthworms in the soil, which is why they are overwhelmingly a rural and agricultural-edge problem — properties beside pasture, hayfield or old sod produce them in enormous numbers.
In late September and October, the adults seek overwintering shelter. They gather on warm, sun-facing walls — south and west elevations — in the afternoon, then work their way into wall voids, attics and soffits through the smallest gaps. There they sit dormant all winter. Every mild spell wakes some of them, and they head for light, which is your window.
Boxelder bugs, western conifer seed bugs and brown marmorated stink bugs do the same thing on the same schedule, and are handled the same way.
Why timing is the whole job
By the time you are seeing flies indoors in January, they are already inside the wall assembly and nothing sprayed indoors will reach them meaningfully. The treatment that works is an exterior residual applied to the sun-facing walls, soffits and around openings in early to mid September — before the aggregation, not after.
That is why we book this work seasonally and will tell you in February that the right answer is a vacuum now and a call in August. Selling you a winter interior treatment for cluster flies would be taking your money for very little.
What helps alongside treatment
- Screen the attic and soffit vents properly. Most rural houses have at least one vent screen that has rusted through.
- Caulk around window and door frames, particularly on the south and west elevations.
- Seal the gaps around exterior light fixtures, hose bibs and utility penetrations.
- Fit or repair chimney caps.
- Accept the vacuum as part of life. Even a good exterior treatment reduces the numbers by most, not all — anyone promising zero is overselling.

Why do I get flies in the house in the middle of winter?
They entered in September or October and have been dormant in your wall voids and attic since. A mild spell warms them, they become active, and they move toward light — which is why they appear at upstairs windows on the first warm day rather than coming in from outside.
When should I book treatment?
Early to mid September, before the aggregation begins in earnest. This is one of the few pest problems where the calendar matters more than the severity, and a September booking outperforms anything done between November and March.
Are cluster flies harmful?
No. They do not bite, they do not breed indoors, and they do not carry disease in the way house flies can. They are a nuisance and, in numbers, an unpleasant one — but nothing in your house is at risk from them.
Will treatment get rid of them completely?
No, and be sceptical of anyone who says otherwise. A well-timed exterior treatment typically reduces the population substantially, and combining it with vent screening and sealing gets it further. Some vacuuming through late winter remains part of rural life here.
